Dylan Thompson Leading by Example

Continuing the success of the winningest quarterback in school history is no small task, but that's what Dylan Thompson is hoping to do in his final season with the Gamecocks.

Of course, the role of the quarterback isn't just to produce on Saturdays.

Thompson has emerged as a leader on the squad and his teammates have taken notice.

"Dylan is just a born leader," said Kaiwan Lewis. "He's the same guy every day, he comes to get better every day. He never takes a day off. I walked in the weight room [the morning of Media Day] to get a lift in. I didn't expect to see many people in there, but I saw Dylan. When you see a leader like that, you gravitate toward him."

Cedrick Cooper added that Thompson and offensive lineman A.J. Cann have won players over with their attitudes during camp.

"[Those are] the dudes I pay attention to the most," Cooper said. "They've always been the same, always worked hard. They never complain, always want us to everything 100%. That's one thing I respect. That's the sort of person I can really listen to and always take after."

Damiere Byrd, who caught plenty of passes from Shaw during his career, said that the transition at quarterback has been seamless.

"[Dylan's] taken the role as leader of the offense," said Damiere Byrd. "He's been more vocal and trying to bring everybody together."

Even the defensive players who are tasked with stopping him during practice admitted that Thompson is an easy guy to follow.

"Dylan's a great leader," said Jonathan Walton. "The enthusiasm he carries with him, he's smart, he reads the defense. Everybody loves him."
