Gamecock Rookies in the Preseason

By Rixon Lane

As South Carolina prepares for its season opener against Texas A&M, former Gamecocks are fighting for playing time in the National Football League.

With nearly three-quarters of the preseason finished, here's how South Carolina's 2014 rookies have performed at the next level.

Jadeveon Clowney (HOU) - 3 total tackles, 1 sack

Clowney sat out Saturday night's game against the Broncos with an injury. The #1 overall pick has shown flashes of the talent that made him the most coveted prospect in this year's draft, but has been hampered by the injury bug. His preseason reps have been limited, but the Texans seem confident that he will become the player they expect him to be in the regular season.

Bruce Ellington (SF) - 9 catches, 86 yards

Ellington has been dealing with an injured finger, but has been productive in the preseason. He has caught nine passes for 86 yards and has also seen time at punt returner. Somewhat of a surprise when he decided to forgo his senior season, Ellington has proven to be an asset for San Francisco and stands an excellent chance of making the roster.

Connor Shaw (CLE) - 8/9, 123 yards, 1 TD, 2 carries, 9 yards

Shaw has only played in one preseason game, but he certainly made the most of it. The former Gamecock signal-caller drove the Browns 91 yards and completed a Hail Mary touchdown pass as time expired. Shaw's incompletion on the two-point conversion kept Cleveland from completing the comeback, but he's become a fan favorite amongst Browns fans.

Chaz Sutton (FA) - 1 tackle

Sutton signed with Tampa Bay after the draft, but was cut by the Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon. Through three preseason games, Sutton had one tackle.

Jimmy Legree (ARI)

After signing with the Seahawks following the draft, Legree is now with the Arizona Cardinals, where is listed as a fourth-string cornerback.

Victor Hampton (CIN)

Hampton had an agonizing wait before finally signing with the Bengals. Now, he is a fourth-string corner and punt returner, fighting for a roster spot.
