NFL Gamecocks Roundup: Only The Young Can Stay

Note: A complete list of Gamecocks on NFL rosters is at the bottom of this post.

- For now, most Gamecocks in the NFL have made it past the first round of cuts, including undrafted wide receiver Damiere Byrd, who has been impressive amongst the Carolina Panthers’ depleted group of receivers. Though he didn’t record any stats in Week 3’s contest, he has five catches for 58 yards and a touchdown so far, and Week 4 could be a major opportunity to shine. Granted, he’ll have Joe Webb throwing to him mostly instead of Cam Newton, but the law of averages is on his side.

- Also amongst the lucky are a pair of on-the-bubble 49ers, Dylan Thompson and Busta Anderson. Thompson isn’t likely to make the 53-man roster, but has impressed in practices, and most teams that go into the season with just two quarterbacks (like San Francisco likely will) usually have a quarterback on the practice squad. As for Busta, he’s been less consistent, getting blanked in the past two games, after leading the team in receptions Week 1 against the Houston Texans. Luckily for him, he was signed to a four-year contract, so it’s somewhat hard to believe they’d be so quick to pull the trigger on cutting him loose this early.

- Now, to pour one out. Center Lemuel Jeanpierre, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks, and Punter Spencer Lanning, formerly of the Denver Broncos, were among the first wave of cuts. Jeanpierre suffered both a severe neck injury and the indignity of agreeing to a settlement to be waived while still hurt. Yet, Jeanpierre returned to the Seahawks in November to add some depth. Jeanpierre may end up being more valuable to other teams. There’s no shame in being a relatively young offensive linemen (he’s 28) who just wasn’t at the level a Super Bowl contender demands. He’ll find a place in the carousel.

- The same can be said for Lanning, who always seems to be a bridesmaid, never a bride. He’s been on eight different teams in his five-year career, including two different stays with the Cleveland Browns (as a starter, no less) and some time with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. This was the league that welcomed 40 year-old Jeff Garcia with open arms, mainly to catch him when his legs turned into dust. Basically, Lanning will land on his feet. Pardon the pun. To give some perspective, the above picture was taken from Aug. 6 while he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was just cut by the Broncos.
